Inspiration & Meaning
In 2020, I embarked on a series of watercolour butterfly paintings inspired by the colors of the rainbow. Each butterfly in this collection represents a specific hue. The yellow Swallowtail takes center stage in this painting. It’s butter yellow highlights on the wing contast with the warm brown of the shadows. This butterfly undoubtedly represents the colour yellow in my series. I wanted to ensure that each watercolour butterfly painting could both stand on its own as a piece of art or be grouped together. My yellow Swallowtail painting in particular looks brilliant as a trio with the Purple Oakblue and the Scarlet Mormon.
Personally as an artist, I’m captivated by color. I wanted to demonstrate that watercolors can transcend their reputation for being “washed out.” I feel that this piece showcases the medium’s potential to create vivid, radiant paintings rich with intricate details. I use a layer method to make sure the colours stay clear and stand out against the white background. Using high quality professional watercolours which have high pigmentations also helped me to add to the vibrancy of the painting.
Alongside colour, I love to emerse myself in nature and love to bring aspects of the wild into my home. Butterflies, particularly are my favourite examples of wildlife and remind me of the warm summer. I love watching them sit and heat their wings under the strong midday sun. I definitely find peace in nature and love to bring that into my artwork and home environment. For this watercolour butterfly series in particular I was inspired by visits to my local butterfly house, Tropical World, in Leeds, Yorkshire.
